Welcome to the MRI Research Infrastructure page of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg.
The MRI research infrastructure houses two 7 Tesla magnetic resonance tomographs (7T MTR).
Europe's first 7 Tesla MRI scanner for human studies was installed in 2004 by the Leibniz Institute of Neurobiology in a building constructed just for the 7T MRI and operated by the Leibniz Institute until 2021. In 2022, the 7T MRI was transferred to the OVGU and will continue to be available for examinations on humans.
The 7T MRI installed in 2004 was upgraded in 2022 to the current state of the art in ultrahigh-field technology through a software and hardware upgrade: Magnetom 7T Plus.
The second 7T MRT, project name "Connectome", made possible by funding from the state of Saxony-Anhalt for the establishment of research infrastructure from resources of the European Structural and Investment Funds, was inaugurated in March 2023 and at that time is the most powerful 7T MRT in Europe. The brand name of the manufacturing company Siemens is MAGNETOM Terra.X Impulse Edition.
The research focus is on the neurosciences with:
- high-resolution structural imaging
- Functional MRI: visual, restingstate, task-based, realtime
- Imaging of deeper brain regions
- Method development: sequences, HF shimming
- Distortion correction
- Flow sensitive 4D MRI
- DTI, fibre tracking
- Clinical studies in cooperation with the University Department of Neurology, German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) Magdeburg, Leibniz Institute of Neurobiology (LIN)
